Jim's Forest to Fly
Forest to Fly made by Jim Koudelka
Forest to Fly fly tying Tabletop and Shelf stations are designed and crafted with functionality, aesthetics, quality and individuality in mind. Each station will be a useful and unique focal point to your tying area.
Each Tabletop Tying Station is made from northwest hardwoods (western walnut, maple) that are chosen for their special qualities such as highly figured grain, natural live edge, shape and colors. The wood is locally sourced and hand picked from special stock at Goby Woods, a Portland, Oregon environmentally green lumber company. After a thoughtful selective process, each piece is then sculpted in a well-equipped wood shop where it is re-sawn, joined, planed, cut and sanded to length and shape. Final assembly is done with fine joinery techniques and followed by sanding to an ultra smooth surface before applying a durable satin finish. Brass rods and tubes, carved out areas and magnets are added for holding tying tools and materials. Each station has a place that holds a background gray card to use for reducing tying eyestrain and assisting in seeing the details and colors of your fly. There is a place on the back of this card for mounting your favorite fish or family photo for display when you are not tying.
These Tying stations are unique in their functions and aesthetics and materials (highly grained hardwoods, Conk shelf mushrooms and ceramic bases). They are designed to use on a table or desk top behind one's vise. A vertical backboard is made with a shelf on both sides, a Conk mushroom shelf and a wood shelf. This whole assembly is mounted on a handmade ceramic stoneware pedestal base and can rotate 360 degrees. The user can easily access both sides of the station. The storage side has numerous brass rods, tubes and magnets to efficiently hold spools of thread, wire, tying tools or other tying materials. Turn it 180 degrees and use the beautiful “clean” side with it's interesting wood like Conk shelf mushroom that holds a grey card. This card is used as a neutral, fixed depth background to reduce eyestrain and show the details and colors of your fly. When the grey card is not in tying mode the backside has a place to display your favorite fish or family photograph.
