Portfolio > Janet's Soda Fire

These pieces are fired using a unique process called "Soda Firing." In this process, much of the piece is not glazed prior to being placed in the kiln. Instead, while the kiln is extremely hot, sodium (in the form of salt or sodium bicarbonate) is introduced into the kiln and a chemical reaction occurs between the sodium and the silica in the clay, which causes a glaze to be created on the pots.
